here. The review of the co-op process that was promised as part of the co-op fee increase to fund the new CECS building has begun. It consists mainly of a student survey.
On 26 March 2001, the Federation of Students, on behalf of all UW co-op students, signed a memorandum of agreement with UW regarding a $25.00 increase of the co-op fee, which is to partially finance the construction of
the new CECS building. In the agreement, UW agreed to undertake "a review of the service delivery mechanisms provided by the Co-operative Education department." The review was to include "students, staff and external experts in co-operative education."
To date, basic terms of reference have been developed and last term the first group of co-op students was surveyed.
The group that developed the basic terms of reference consists of one UW administrator, three CECS staff members, a statistics professor and the Feds Vice-president Education.
According to CECS communications administrator Olaf Naese, the basic terms of reference are as follows: "CECS will survey UW co-op students to measure their level of satisfaction with the services provided by CECS. The survey will also solicit written comments about these services and anything else that concerns the students about CECS. CECS will use the results of the survey to improve services where possible. As an additional exercise, CECS will also be surveying co-op employers and include a number of the same, or similar, questions used in the student survey."
Last term, co-op students on work term were e-mailed a link to a co-op satisfaction survey. Naese described the status of the survey and its deadlines: "The results of the first survey are being tabulated at the moment. A UW student hired by CECS is analyzing the quantitative data part of the survey while two CECS staff members and two students from the Federation of Students are working together to compile the written comments section of the survey. The full survey is only partially complete. The second group of students (currently on their work term) still needs to be surveyed. This will take place during the Winter 2002 term. An interim report will be released in March after the second group of students has been surveyed. It is our hope that a report combining both surveys will be presented during the summer of 2002."
The review of co-op service delivery mechanisms was to begin on or before 26 September 2001. In his strategic plan, Stammers outlined three tasks under the activity "Perform co-op review." Two of the tasks -- devising the terms of reference and soliciting student feedback via a return to campus survey -- are the responsibility of Co-op Students' Council. Stammers is responsible for the third task, which involves participating on the review panel and generating a report.
