Councillor Scott Jones proposed the ban when city planners presented a study on growth of Waterloo.
The motion to introduce a ban failed 3-2. Jones and Councillor Morty Taylor voted for the motion; Councillor Brent Needham, Councillor Bruce Anderson and Mayor Lynne Woolstencroft voted against the motion. Dave Roeder, who was chairing the meeting, did not vote.
The idea will be presented again next Monday after city staff have been able to collect information.
Council will consider the issue next Monday 3 March in City council Chambers at 100 Regina Street South.

I think controlling the sprawl of student housing is a good idea. I have to walk about 25 minutes along University Ave. (from the east) every day and the housing between WLU and UW is a complete eye-sore. Whether this is due to negligent landlords or irresponsible students is another debate.
So, what's the big deal? I've heard the FEDS and students whine about this issue for months, yet I haven't really heard a logical reason why there's a problem with it.
In a nutshell: Students should be allowed to live wherever they want... but lodging houses should not be allowed to run rampant across the city. I don't want to live in a city whose entirety looks like the area I have to walk past every day.[ Parent ]

...The Chronicle had an interesting article about this issue yesterday. Too bad they don't have a website.

Is it just an issue of liability? That is could someone sue the owner of the site if there was a bunch of negative reviews of them they think that this caused them to loose business.
Thanks[ Parent ]
