My Two Cents (Matthew Campbell)

Oooh, where to start...

I became aware of a certain campaign before my time here where a pro-life group was asked to redesign posters because of the message they had. While this didn't involve FEDS funding, it did involve their name (sponsorship?) and caused quite a debate. If my interpretation serves me correctly, opponents of these posters were upset because it looked like FEDS sponsored (at least in an indirect way) the graphics that were in question.

Fast-forwarding, I find it disturbing as a social conservative (known by others as prejudice, bigot, intolerant, etc., etc.) that certain choices are endorsed by the local student government.

At least I give some credit to WPIRG that while it might be time-consuming and hard to do at times, they allow students to opt out of their organization. The same cannot and should not be said for FEDS.

Why do I say this? FEDS is the student government; it is involved in things that do impact all students, no matter what. That cannot be said for any club or organization. Yet, as our government, FEDS should not be endorsing any controversial group/organization. Political reasons have already been mentioned, but there are also moral objections to some FEDS-sponsored initiatives. I'll take for example, the easy accessibility of condoms on campus. When I arrived here in September, one was sitting in a FEDS-sponsored bag. Certain religious groups, which hold significant portions of the population, have condoned the use these devices. Somewhere down the road, part of what I paid went towards purchasing that box, just so I could throw it out on the first day I saw it!

Sadly, this is not the only example and if I were to mention others right now, I would get the usual rant of being a bigot et all. You all are smart though, and I trust you know with whom in mind I say this! Maybe instead of sponsoring different politically oriented groups, FEDS should instead allocate that money into other, more universally accepted projects whose benefit cannot be questioned.
