Why must debate = insults
Authored by: concerned on Tuesday, May 18 2004 @ 12:02 PM CDT
Ryan - I don't claim to be an expert on this subject. I simply think that the university should not be negotiating such deals without consulting those bodies (Feds and GSA) that represent students.

My comments were intended to spark debate and have students bring into question what the university is doing here. I think that it is important for students to be on top of these things, and as representatives of students, the Feds and GSA would be the best to do so.

It sounds like the university is going ahead with the swipe system and some agreement relating to a small discount. Therefore, I don't forsee a vote or referendum occuring (as no fee would be imposed - if the university needed capital for the swipe system they would probably find it somewhere in the operating budget). I thought that if there is some agreement committing to this sort of arrangement with GRT on behalf of UW students then the Feds and GSA could not then negotiate any sort of U-Pass (until the swipe agreement is up for renewal, which could easily be 5 years away).

The intention of these comments are to simply be 'food for thought'. I thought that this was the main purpose of UWS - to debate. Then why are you, a founder of UWS, dealing out insults? That's really encouraging...

In regards to your 2002 reference I am assuming that you are refering to the bar situation? Regardless, given some past 'mistakes' of former Execs should members no longer have faith in their current representatives to be a voice on their behalf?

Is an administrator that hasn't been a student for approx. 30 years a better authority on what is best for students? I am not saying that it makes them a poor administrator but that they should take current student input into account when making decisions on behalf of students. I still think that the Feds and GSA are the best methods of bringing student input to admin (I don't disagree that it is sometime flawed but I still think that it is the best option).
