I use lynx semi-frequently to view UWS, and I don't think it renders that bad -- especially compared to many other sites (there's no javascript!!). It is even reasonable to write comments in lynx.
The sidebar at the top is a side effect of frames and the way lynx deals with them -- and there really isn't a great way around it. That said, once you figure out that the sidebar is at the top, it is pretty easy to skip by it.
There's another text based browser, links (not lynx) which may be more preferable.
