Ask uws: How should Fed Hall be used?

In the coming year Fed Hall will lose an operational subsidy with the end of the Fed Hall fee. What do uws readers think should be done with it.

In 1983, students voted in a referendum to approve the construction of Federation Hall and a $7.50 fee increase. The pub was constructed with financing from the university. Over the past 20 years, since the fee was first charged in 1984, part of the fee has gone to pay back the loan from the university according to a fee schedule determined that year.

The money that did not go to the loan has been going into Fed Hall revenue and subsidizing operations. This year the subsidy amounted to $99,407.

Fed Hall is open on Thursday nights and also operates at other times for club, society, private, and Feds events.

The building and the land on it is owned by the university, but is controlled and operated by Feds under agreement with the university.

What could be done with Fed Hall? What should be done with Fed Hall?

This is a really stupid question, but...

...done with what? With Fed Hall? Is there speculation that it will not continue on as usual as a bar/night club?

good question
Authored by: jrodgers on Thursday, April 08 2004 @ 05:59 PM CDT
What else could you do with it? Maybe open on another night using the Phil's model of $5 cover and cheap cheap drinks? Sunday night maybe - people that leave campus for the weekend usually come back that day. Maybe have live DJ's and such... It definately needs another night. Thursday's are really successful - or so it would appear from the line ups. What would it take to make up roughly 100K? How much does thursday make? Not being in the bar business i have no idea.

Fed Hall
Authored by: AC on Friday, April 09 2004 @ 12:06 PM CDT
Charge a cover fee to cover the cost of operations. Once the building is paid for, I don't see why the entire student body should be paying for the opperation of a nighclub that a few (or most) use. Those who use the building should be supporting its operation, those who don't shouldn't.

As for usage of the space, it should be made available for other groups to rent out for events. I believe that it currently is though. There are occasional proms and staff parties there, as I recall.

The posibility of opening for another night should be explored.

question about the fee
Authored by: student on Friday, April 09 2004 @ 06:40 PM CDT
I understood that Winter 2004 was the last term that the fee was being charged. I'm looking at my fee statement for Spring 2004 and the Fed Hall fee is still there.

Did I misunderstand? Could someone please clarify this for me. What is the last term in which this fee will be charged?

Thanks.

Radical idea: Make Fed Hall the Bombshelter
Authored by: Ryan on Monday, April 12 2004 @ 02:57 PM CDT

Here's a radical idea: Change the name fo Fed Hall to the Bombshelter and renovate the current Bombshelter into lounge space adjacent to the great hall.

¿Can you uws'ers look into this for me?

enough of that

I think the university has enough Coffee places(especially with the new Tim Hortons coming) as well as plenty of study space.

Cover
Authored by: TO Clubber on Thursday, April 15 2004 @ 02:00 PM CDT
If the cover was $5 or less, I would think 90% of people would still go.

I think at least 800 people go every week - sometimes over 1000 - so that's $4000 right there.

Fed is open 40 weeks a year? = $160,000.

They can charge laurier students more too, since they're willing to come all that way, and beg people to sign them in when they get here, I'm sure they're willing to pay $6 or $7 to get in.

Maybe ppl will stay pay cover...
Authored by: Valley Girl on Monday, April 26 2004 @ 07:20 PM CDT
but even when there was the cover idea at fed, ppl complained like crazy! (at least the regulars who remembered time b4 cover) Cover used to be (FAll 2002) $1.75. Drinks then, were also $1.75. That didn't seem to do the trick either. I don't think it's a cover issue we're dealing with. or a drink price issue. I think that Fed has a reputation for being full of first years. Upper year students are turned off by the idea of going to Fed. Even if they are into the clubbin' scene. I think the main focus is not how to change fed (because let's face it - the venue itself is fine) It's the atmosphere and the reputation Fed has that discourages ppl. Figure out how to get rid of that stigma, and Fed could be AWESOME!
