Pharmacy school gets city's go ahead [DB, The Record]

Not uws newsThe Daily Bulletin and The Record are reporting that Kitchener city council approved a $30 million investment for construction of UW's planned health sciences campus with a School of Pharmacy.

Avvey Peters from UW Communications & Public Affairs writes:

Six of seven councillors present spoke strongly in favour of the proposal and the benefits of developing a health sciences campus, anchored by a school of pharmacy, and the council vote was 6-1 in favour.

Accompanied by a delegation from the university, president David Johnston spoke briefly at the meeting, underscoring the benefits of the proposed partnership to both UW and the city. He finished by asking for council's continued support for a downtown health sciences campus, saying, "Our enthusiasm continues not only unabated, but accelerated; this will be an extraordinary boost to the economic and civic life of this community."

Frank Etherington of The Record writes:

A $30-million injection of taxpayer cash was prescribed last night by all but one member of Kitchener council to support a University of Waterloo plan to create a downtown health services and pharmacy school.

The ambitious project to help revitalize the core is on the former Epton site at the intersection of King and Victoria streets in the west end of the city.

According to the stories, the health sciences campus will still need approval from the Minitry of Training Colleges and Universities and the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care.

Once again the feds promises one thing and can't deliver. First it was the dispute about the liquor license and now once everyone starts to get excited that bomber would be renovated they drop the ball again. Well at least we'll have bomber open for a little longer...
