slashdot.org is one of the most popular geek-oriented news sites on the web. It has many, many readers and when slashdot links in a page it gets an obscene amount of traffic. Many times, smaller sites cannot handle the massive trffic from this "slashdotting". Thus, it is a credit to UWS that it was linked in by slashdot and didn't go down.
