Minister considers end of tuition freeze [TorStar]

The Toronto Star is reporting that the Ontario government may allow tuition increases after the two-year freeze with changes to the student aid program.

End in sight for tuition freeze? The Star 8 Aug 2004

Louise Brown writes:

Ontario's Liberal government warns it could allow future tuition hikes at colleges and universities, but they would be coupled with more generous and flexible student loans.

The government announced a two-year tuition freeze in April, as well as funding to help colleges and universities offset the cost. But Mary Anne Chambers, minister of training, colleges and universities, says she could imagine letting fees rise again after that, as long as financial help is available for students who need it.

How is this a good solution?

Wasn't crippling student debt the original problem?

I know OSAP isn't great as it stands, but allowing more loans is only a band-aid fix. Those loans have to get paid back.
