Choosing to Agree
Authored by: JShelley on Friday, October 22 2004 @ 03:11 AM CDT
Dan,

I would still emphasize that Elevation IS Embassy; while it is a differenct facet of Embassy, it takes place under the recognized and registered charity "The Embassy." Distinguishing too much between the two is problematic. I do recognize that they serve different functions, but they are inextricably joined!

As for ESA, you highlight my fear. You say, "The ESA may choose to seek Brandon's input on the matter" and "it is up to the ESA whether or not they choose to agree with Brandon." Is it fair for me to suggest, having been a part of Embassy for a few years, and having been involved with leadership, that ESA has no option but to choose to side with Brandon? Is it really a choice? Embassy is "Brandon's vision." Time and time again I was told this, whether in meetings or in services. Do you think ESA has the ability to alter this vision? I do not think so. You suggest that ESA can choose to side with Brandon, I think it will. I think that the power will remain in Brandon's hands. He will call the shots, determine the topics, et cetera. I guess you could refer to as a convention -- it may not be laid out in the constitution of ESA that Brandon is in charge, but it will be an accepted convention. Is this accurate? If not, why?

I fear that ESA's will always be forced to act in agreement and accordance with Embassy's leadership. Can ESA exist, then, without some element of deception?

Maybe ESA should dissolve itself -- Embassy could look for new facilities or restructure and could sponsor existing and legitimate clubs, Christian or otherwise, to help students. If the mandate is to help students, is it necessary to have ESA or Embassy's name on those actions? Is this not a more biblical understanding of service? Is it for the glory, the recognition?

These are all important questions that ESA/Embassy must grapple with. Unfortunately, because Embassy does not wish to discuss these things, or anything for that matter, with the likes of myself (or other "critics"), my raising this concern would go unnoticed (as have many others!). I am banned from Embassy's site, so I can't raise these questions in a context for the broader community to consider. You can. Why not consider other alternatives. If ESA HAS to exist, I would ask why?
