That's a big assumption

Just because 140 students wrote letters doesn't mean they
were all at the event at Fed Hall. That's a wild
assumption. There could have been 50 students at Fed Hall
and each of them told 2 others about the situation which
causes them to write letters.

Why not simply do a show of hands at your next Fed Hall
gathering to get a rough idea of how many people are UW
students? Shouldn't be that hard to do. Although if people
realize why you're asking, so may "erroneously" put up
their hands :S
