Given the present hostility, I can see why he would hesitate to make further statements because potentially anything he says will be used against him.
Apologizing for his position is equivalent to admitting that his original controversial were exactly what he meant.
From the above perspective I think this is an apt apology because it addresses exactly what caused the present situation -- a miscommunication, and not a conflict of fundamental belief.[ Parent ]
