what to apologize for
Authored by: 49 on Monday, November 01 2004 @ 10:51 AM CST
"Second, his saying that killing civilians is immoral doesn't mean a lot as far as this situation is concerned in light of the fact that on the Coren show he said, "Everybody above 18 is a combatant." Nothing in his apology contradicts anything he said on the show."

From what I have seen on the show, Dr. Elmasry's logic was pretty clear...
In a war, combatants are "legitimate targets".
Israel has a draft so everyone above 18 is a combatant
=> everyone above 18 in Israel is a legitimate target

Whether this holds or not is his personal opinion and I do believe it is protected by freedom of speech. But what happens is people took this idea and logic and claimed he was promoting hate, racism, indiscriminated killing, killing of civilians... He apologized for the misunderstanding... I don't think he should apologize for his logical statement (which did not have a lot emotion outburst, well at least had much less emotion outburst than those who were criticizing him) whether someone else agrees with his logic or not.
