Racial Jewishness has nothing to do with self-identification. Jews have been racialized; they constitute a "race". Racial identities are imposed on individuals. Yaacov already mentioned this point, but to reiterate the Nazis didn't care if a Jew converted to Christianity and no longer identified as Jewish. She still embodied Jewishness and suffered the consequences.
