VPI Candidate Anitta Satkunarajah's statement from the feds website:
==========================================================
["Hello Everyone!
My name is Anitta Satkunarajah and I am 3B political science/peace and conflict studies student. I am running for Vice-President Internal because I want to ensure that student needs are being met at our diverse campus. I have been actively involved in many Feds clubs through out my years at UW and am passionate about making positive changes that reflect the interest of our student community.
My leadership and volunteer experience in our UW community has inspired me to give back to students by meeting their diverse needs. I have enjoyed helping first year students adjust to their new home as a Village Orientation Committee frosh leader and an Arts frosh leader. I am also take part in assisting international students with their integration into our student life as a Shadow Program Mentor. I take initiatives to be involved in my faculty as an Arts student representative for the Senate Undergraduate Council and as the Vice President Internal of the Arts Student Union. My involvements in the past have all given me the opportunity to fully understand student needs and concerns on campus. I have served as the President and an executive member of the Waterloo Tamil Students' Association since first year. I was also the Minister of Internal Affairs of the Political Science Students' Association and have volunteered with the Legal Resource Office. I also have a vast interest in international development and have volunteered oversees and continued to be involved in many initiatives in the community. My volunteer and leadership experience qualifies me to be you VPI and I want to work with you to address your needs and concerns.
Platform:
Proper facilitation of clubs and services
As your Vice President Internal I would like to ensure that adequate facilities and funding is available for Clubs and Services, recognizing their vital importance to student life. Our clubs and services should receive more support and assistance from our student government in order to foster a healthier club atmosphere on campus. Informing clubs and services about the resources available is important, especially the amount of funds available each term to clubs and services. As your VPI I will create the friendly environment for all student groups to work in.
Motivate students to think and act "without borders"
I would encourage students to take campus wide action in charitable ventures both locally and internationally. As your VPI I would support all student initiatives to build our UW community.
Our student government needs to be more proactive in helping those in need in the UW community and outside. For years, Feds executives have done little to address global catastrophes. Campus clubs acted immediately to deliver aid to the victims. There are many calamities occurring around the world and our student government should be more aware and willing to help those in need. As VPI I will motivate students to think and act "without borders". Locally, nationally and internationally, our student government must facilitate the building of community spirit and the promotion of additional awareness of the global issues in our society today.
Promote Diversity
By uniting clubs, services and student societies I would actively promote diversity on campus through campus wide activities. It is unfortunate that first year students and international students are not integrated fully in our UW community. Both groups are not aware enough of the goings-on of our student government. If elected, I intend to incorporate the diverse needs of the incoming year of first-year university students into our student government initiatives and build university pride by introducing inter-faculty events. All students should have a say in the planning of Feds events; because ultimately it is all about what the students want, I would give them incentives to take part in our diverse events and all opinions should count.
Accountability, Integrity and Responsibility (A.I.R)
I want to ensure all student groups that the Internal Administration Committee and Internal Funding Committee are both accountable to all the concerns and needs of student groups. Both committees are responsible for effectively communicating with all student groups, I have done my research and it is evident that some clubs feel detached from the whole process. It is unfortunate that the Feds are seen by students more like a separate entity rather than what it is: an extension of UW's student population. As Vice President Internal, I would address any and all of student ideas, concerns and initiatives with immediate and respectful attention regardless of what matters are presented and by whom they are presented. With the serious intention of assisting all fellow students, I will see to it that all concerns and ideas are treated in a very fair and equitable manner. Feds will be working for and with the students - not as an isolated and detached organization. I would personally like to eliminate excess bureaucracy and bring together students and Feds to collectively build our UW community. The simple fact is that the onus is on Vice President Internal to initiative one-on-one and group interaction with students to inform students about the ways they can be served by the Federation of Students.
Clubs, services and student societies will serve to promote unity amongst students, as well as creating initiatives that have the support of a large cross section of the student community. My assistance will see Feds play a more intimate and integral role ensuring the social advancement the university. I want to see a fully utilized version of the Internal Administration Committee and the Internal Funding Committee that will be much more effective in addressing student needs.
I wish to put my experience, dedication and energy to meet your needs!
On February 15-17 remember to VOTE Anitta Satkunarajah for your Feds VP Internal!]"
