I'm not disputing (right now) the validity of their argument, that because the Feds are an external organization, they can't control WPIRG's funding in this manner.
I've never heard them make this argument. The reason Feds is running the referendum is because Feds has always run all referenda, and a referendum is the only way that the Board of Governors will approve the addition or removal of a fee from the fee statement. Feds has no real power over WPIRG's fees. Theoretically, the Board of Governors could choose not to honour the results of the referendum.
I've always thought that it was kind of strange that Feds was paying for a referendum to decide the future of the WPIRG fee. That's just the way things work around here.[ Parent ]
