[RDC] EWB looking for computer donations

Engineers Without Borders needs help in collecting computers to send to the Philippines to help out of school youth. Charitable tax receipts can be provided.

The deadline for computer donations is March 31, which is this Thursday! Please email Engineers Without Borders before then to donate a computer.

The UW chapter of Engineers Without Borders (EWB) has set a goal to collect 75 donated computers to send to computer livelihood centres for out of school youth in the Philippines. Donation of computer parts such as monitors, printers, and scanners are also welcome. Charitable tax receipts for up to $200 can be provided for donated equipment.

This EWB project is aimed at empowering and educating youth in the Philippines, some 12 million of whom are currently unemployed and out of school. The agency has partnered with the Department of Social Welfare of the Philippines government to set up 15 computer training centres across the South Asian country.

If you have a computer to donate, please email gotcomputers@gmail.com. Also, please spread the word about this.

For more information about the project, please go to www.waterloo.ewb.ca.

Whats the minimum specs
Authored by: hmmm on Wednesday, March 30 2005 @ 12:26 AM CST
I have some really old computers that are laying around back at my parents house. What are the minimum specs you are looking for?

ie I have a couple 286s and 486s laying around. The 286s I would imagine are for sure too old. But how are 486s?

Sorry

I have some old computers that would be perfect for this.

But there is no way I am giving them to the Philippines. There are children here that could use them. Philippines should look after itself.

Maybe WPIRG can give you some money?

After all, they spend over $100,000 a year just on salaries. What a waste.

good discussion
Authored by: Sonya on Friday, April 01 2005 @ 02:18 AM CST
First off, thanks for bringing this up. Development projects need to be challenged like this...

The goal of the program is to get youth off the streets and away from drugs, early parenthood and to restore confidence in their own skills and ability. I wouldn't call that code monkey training, but you're entitled to your opinion.

As a computer engineering student myself, IT outsourcing is a threat towards potential jobs. But what should we do about it? Does this mean that we should stop encouraging out-of-school youth to learn marketable skills? Should we stop all International development work to assure that our dominant positions in the global world never be compromised?

You should come to our discussion sessions - we were discussing this exact issue during one of our sessions last term :-)

Just wanted to say that we will be making another computer shipment at the begining of May, so it's not too late to donate used computers. Email gotcomputers@gmail.com if you want to donate a computer.

The Bottom Line
Authored by: Zeke on Tuesday, April 05 2005 @ 06:33 PM CDT
The bottom line is I look out for myself and the people in my country first. If I have the time/resources/will to help out other countries then I will and thats great. But I will never ever help other countries when there are people here who could use my help. When I see that every here is taken care of then yes I will help out elsewhere, but until that time these foreign countries are of no importance to me.
