I would be the "cynic". *ducks* No, that was not an invitation to resume flaming!
Sonya, the clarification was much appreciated :)
Now, before the flaming starts again, let me clarify myself...
Don't get me wrong. I have no doubts that EWB is pursuing this project with the purest of intentions. In fact, if I had my old desktop with me here in Waterloo, I would consider donating it myself.
I think my comments just came out a little less obviously tongue-in-cheek than I'd hoped... I'll have to be more careful with that in the future ;)
Anyway...
I am NOT toting conspiracy theories. (THAT much, at least, should have been obvious.)
Should we stop all International development work to assure that our dominant positions in the global world never be compromised?
Well, there's that extreme, to which I'd answer "no". Then there's the other one (the one I tried to address earlier).
My concern is about the net long-run effect of "development projects"... that they may (intentionally or otherwise) serve to fuel the expansion of low-wage labour pools for the developed world. Great for us. Not so good for them. I suppose that's entirely arguable depending on your politcal position... but not being a big fan of "trickle-down economics" myself, I generally consider this a bad thing.
But I'm glad to see that you've been addressing the issue. I'd be interested to see what you've come up with. In case you don't feel like discussing that in full here, when are your meetings?
BTW - I'm in computer engineering too, but I can't really say that I consider outsourcing a threat. What outsourcing does for us is create a drive to be more innovative. And that's always a good thing.[ Parent ]
