The University of Waterloo programming team has placed fourth in the world at the 29th ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest World Finals in China.
The contest, held at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, included teams from all of the world, who had advanced from regional contests held in the fall. It's the 13th consecutive year that a Waterloo team has competed in the world finals, which Waterloo has won twice.
All four top teams receive gold medals. Waterloo was the North American champion; the next-ranking North American teams were the University of British Columbia and the University of Illinois, who were tied with other schools for 17th place.
The Waterloo team made it to the finals by placing first at the regional championship, held at Sheridan College. Another Waterloo team placed second, but only one was permitted to proceed to the world finals.
Team members were Ralph Furmaniak, Matei Zaharia, and David Nuram, who were coached by Computer Science professor Gordan Cormack.
