"I'm glad that you never had any problems in adjusting to anything, that no one ever cut you any breaks, and that your success is due to you alone with no help from anyone else. "
I got lots of help along the way, because I knew enough to go and ask for it. I spend lots of hours in the tutorial centres and at TAs and profs office hours. I also tried to help out fellow students along the way myself. So don't assume things about me.
I certainly would be sympathetic to students in extra-ordinary circumstances in their first year (death in the family, medical conditions, etc.) Those students deserve a lot of extra consideration.
But there are lots & lots & lots of resources for other students who are having problems adjusting and/or with their courses.
No one says students have to come to university straight from high school. If they aren't emotionally and mentally mature enough to be here, they should do something else for a couple years and come back when they are better prepared for the change. If they have to throw away a few thousand dollars to realize this, it's still money well spent.
We certainly aren't doing students any favours by giving them freebies. For the most part, it's just going to make them even less motivated than they already are.[ Parent ]
